As expected, 'Sex and the City: The Movie' was the biggest drawcard at US cinema's this past weekend,with the film raking in US$55.7 million at the box office and setting a new record.
Sarah Jessica Parker and co have triumphantly returned to their old characters and exceeded expectations with their box office success, with the release marking the best ever debut of an R-rated comedy and smashing Warner Bros. hopes of bringing in US$30 million in it's first weekend.
Dan Fellman, head of distribution for the company told The Associated Press, "Women power. It was outstanding this weekend."
'Sex and the City:The Movie' has become the fifth biggest R-rated movie opening of all-time, with 'The Matrix Reloaded' coming in at number 1 with US$91.8 million.
Rumors have begun circulating that a sequel is already in the works, however, Parker has refused to confirm or deny the stories, telling CNN, "My gut tells me it's up to you and your colleagues and the critics and the people who show up... So anything beyond that is really kind of out of our hands in a perfectly wonderful way."
